NETFLIX'S "OBLITERATED" Non-Spoiler Review:

 Netflix's "Obliterated" Non-Spoiler Review:

Source: Netflix

Obliterated is a series that defies easy categorization, blending elements of comedy, romance, action, and suspense. However, it delves into extremes that require a strong viewer discretion advisory.

PLOT:

A specialized task force is assigned to apprehend a Russian arms dealer. After successfully capturing him, the team indulges in a celebratory party in Vegas that takes a dramatic turn. The mission is far from complete, requiring the team to sober up and face the challenges at hand. How they navigate this forms the basic premise of Obliterated.

When initially reading the plot on Netflix, I wasn't immediately intrigued. However, after witnessing its sustained presence on the top 10 list for four weeks, I decided to give it a try.

Primarily a comedy-driven series with a sprinkling of romance and action, it manages to deliver on character development, not to the point of deep connection but certainly up to a level of acceptance.

Throughout the series, every mission is sabotaged by a single character to an irreversible extent. Even with a sacrifice at the end, placing the entire blame on a single character doesn't make for compelling writing.

While there are numerous plot holes and coincidences allowing for improbable escapes from near-death situations, the series falls neither into the greatest nor the worst category.

THE GOOD:

The comedy effectively lands, creating genuinely hilarious situations, and the choice of refreshing locations adds to the appeal.

Kimi Rutledge's portrayal of Maya Lerner is justified and refreshing. Her character is relatable, innocent, and well-executed.

Shelley Hennig as Ava Winters delivers a good performance, although the character remains underdeveloped. A hinted shade of grey is not explored, but Hennig manages to do justice to the role.

Alyson Gorske, playing Lana, stands out with one of the best performances in the series, embodying a typical Gen Z girl.

The writing shines in parts, offering unexpected plot twists that catch the audience by surprise.

THE BAD:

The R-rated elements are excessive, venturing into places that might make viewers uncomfortable. The R-rated comedy explores every conceivable avenue, at times too directly, making for uneasy viewing.

Certain scenes, such as drinking urine and soiling pants, pushed the discomfort level for me. I found myself skipping through these moments.

The series follows a routine story with a different plot, and the choice of a drunken team doesn't significantly alter the narrative. While it generates fun and uncomfortable moments, the overall story remains mediocre.

OVERALL:

Is Obliterated binge-worthy? Yes, but exercise discretion. The comedy hits the mark, the plot maintains momentum, and unexpected twists will take you by surprise. The cast, across the board, delivers commendable performances.

I recommend giving it a watch.
